abstract = "One of the most important agricultural activities for Brazilian
economy, sugarcane crop is increasing in S{\~a}o Paulo State,
especially after 2003, mainly due to the growing demand for
ethanol produced from sugarcane. Considering this expansion, it is
important to evaluate sugarcane crop cycle, becoming harmonic
analysis of time series applied to satellite data one useful
technique to characterize vegetation cover and its biophysical
properties. The objective of this study is to apply harmonic
analysis to evaluate the temporal behavior of the vegetation index
EVI2 for sugarcane crop areas in the administrative region of
Ribeir{\~a}o Preto, one of the most important regions of
sugarcane production in S{\~a}o Paulo State. For this purpose, a
time series of EVI2/MODIS images from 2005 to 2007 was used,
assessing the temporal pattern of this vegetation index in a pixel
located in a sugarcane experimental site. In addition, Canasat
project thematic maps were used to identify pixels of MODIS images
in which land cover was only sugarcane, assessing the overall
behavior of the crop in the study area. At the experimental site,
the harmonic related to the annual period was responsible for most
of the variance, showing the crop cycle. The results show that it
is possible to apply harmonic analysis bands in colored
compositions to delimitate agricultural areas, which are stand out
in the third harmonic, related to the annual period.",
